Teaching

Drama of Diversity

GE class in Theater. I was Prof. Michelle Liu Carriger’s TA.
Numbers of students: 40

This is an undergraduate general education course. With a focus on the US theater, this course concerned how theater represents various aspects of racial, cultural, and gender identities and received highly positive evaluations. A diverse cross-section of students from different institutions—UCLA, University of Southern California, and high schools outside California—enrolled in this course. I guided students to analyze values of diversity in drama and improved analytical skills. Student course evaluations were highly positive, remarking upon my communication skills and effective assistance to students.

Students’ feedback from anonymous teaching evaluation (2020)

The TA’s feedback was extremely helpful in building my understanding and improving my skills. I always looked forward to seeing it so I could work on those things and improve.

Yun-Pu is super kind and approachable! I really appreciated the followup emails that she would send to send updates about the course. I also really appreciated that the course grades were updated regularly. It was super helpful to have comments left on our quiz responses to know where we could have improved. Another thing that Yun-Pu did that was super helpful was posting a thread of weekly good answers! It was really helpful to see even more on where we could improve and the type of approach we should take for the quizzes.Yun-Pu was a great TA; she was clear in her expectations and gave useful feedback.

Yun-Pu was an extremely helpful and approachable TA who was concerned with our learning and understanding. This course was really great with the addition of the discussion board that she monitored! I’ve really enjoyed this course.

Elementary Modern Chinese

Language class in Asian Languages and Cultures. I was Prof. Yu-wen Yao’s TA.
Numbers of students: 25

This class aims to make students familiar with daily conversation in Chinese. I assisted in students to improve their pronunciation and elevated their Mandarin Chinese skills from the level of elementary to intermediate through hands-on instruction in class and in person advising.

Students’ feedback from anonymous teaching evaluation (2021)

I really liked this TA I think she was very helpful in helping students find tools that would benefit their language learning ability. I also liked the daily check in questions as it gave each student a chance to participate in discussion.

This is my third Chinese class I take at UCLA and the first evaluation I’ve felt inclined to fill out because Yang laoshi is an amazing TA who genuinely cares about her students’ learning. I couldn’t have asked for a better TA!

She was very approachable and friendly. Learning a new language can be scary, however I felt very comfortable practicing pronunciations or syntax with Yang laoshi. She always corrected her students each time a mistake was made, but did so in a way that was constructive and encouraging. She was very well-liked and respected by all her students.
